WIZO Victoria was honoured to welcome World WIZO President Esther Mor in July. During her whirlwind visit, Esther spoke at various functions to update members and the community about WIZO’s work in Israel in areas of child care, day care centres, legal aid and support hotlines for parents and victims of abuse.

Esther spoke to members about WIZO Australia’s newest project, a centre for girls at risk, aptly named Makom BaLev – A Place In The Heart. WIZO Victoria is assisting in developing this centre and it is the first of its kind in Israel and much needed in Beer Sheva. Makom BaLev will take many young women off the streets and away from prostitution, giving them an opportunity to be educated and become proud of what they can achieve.

Throughout her visit, Esther met various WIZO member groups. A private cocktail party was held in her honour which focussed on fundraising for the rebuilding of the new kitchen at WIZO Australia’s flagship boarding school. Amongst the many WIZO projects in Israel, the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ for Australian WIZO is the Ahuzat Yeladim boarding school in Haifa. This school provides a home for children and youth deemed ‘at risk’, who have no other place to go – Ahuzat Yeladim is the last hope for them.

WIZO Victoria’s annual Child Of The Year function was held on Sunday the 23rd of July 2017. In the lead up to the function, each WIZO group presents a child to be the face of their campaign and holds functions to raise money for their child candidate. The child is generally selected from a member’s family, however, this year several groups chose an alternative child from one of the WIZO Australia projects. WIZO Victoria was thrilled to have Esther Mor as the guest of honour at the event and she was so proud of the choice made by some of the groups to represent children from one of the projects as she personally knew the children from visiting the projects in Israel.

Esther was truly amazed at the sum raised and congratulated WIZO Victoria members. WIZO Masada was placed first with a record breaking amount steered by President Caroline Heard. Masada’s candidate was Madison Mitchell, granddaughter of Sandy Lewis. WIZO Nirim followed in second place and Machar came in third place.
